Choose the character, not just the colour.

A wood floor is read across a whole room. Look at the grain, the surface and the proportions together, not as separate choices.

Grain and grading

Knots, filling and tonal variation give timber its character. Compare the Rustic and Character grades in the collection, and ask to see a representative selection rather than one perfect sample.

Texture and finish

Brushing draws out the grain. Compare the appearance of natural-oiled and UV-oiled surfaces in your own light, then check the care routine specified for the chosen finish.

Board proportions

Width and length set the rhythm of a plank floor. With parquet, block size and laying direction shape the pattern. Consider these alongside doorways, sightlines and the scale of the room.

Three layouts. A different sense of space.

Start with the architecture, then choose the pattern. Each featured floor below has its own dimensions, construction and finish.

Herringbone

A measured rhythm.

Rectangular blocks interlock at right angles, bringing movement to the grain. Block size, laying direction and the treatment of the perimeter change the scale of the pattern.

Chevron

A precise meeting of lines.

Angled ends meet in a continuous V. The direction of the pattern draws the eye through the room, making alignment, setting out and thresholds part of the design.

The engineering matters as much as the finish.

A well-specified floor brings the surface, the construction and the conditions on site together. These are the details to resolve before installation.

The hardwood wear layer

Ask for the thickness of the hardwood surface, not just the board overall. It informs the options for future refinishing, alongside the joint profile, condition and manufacturer's guidance.

The construction and heating

Our featured floors use two-layer or three-layer construction. Underfloor heating suitability is conditional. Check the exact product, heating system and fitting method together.

The details on site

Subfloor moisture, finished floor levels, expansion allowances, thresholds and pattern setting out all deserve a place in the conversation. Share your plans so the fitting scope can be discussed.

Bring the material into the conversation.

Visit our Rickmansworth showroom with your plans, joinery finishes or stone samples. Compare the timber alongside the other materials in your scheme, then ask about samples for your shortlist.

  • Look at grain and tonal variation across more than one board.
  • Check surface texture and sheen in daylight and evening light.
  • Discuss the finish, care routine and installation requirements together.

Before you specify.

The questions that make a more informed engineered wood flooring choice.

What is engineered wood flooring?

An engineered board has a real hardwood surface bonded to supporting layers. This construction is designed to improve dimensional stability compared with solid timber. It is still a natural material: moisture, room conditions and installation requirements remain important.

What do Character and Rustic grades mean?

These labels describe the natural features permitted in the timber, such as knots, filling and colour variation. They are not a ranking of construction quality. Grading rules vary between suppliers, so compare the individual product description and several boards or samples.

Can engineered wood flooring be used with underfloor heating?

The featured products are recorded as suitable with conditions, not universally suitable for every system. Check the exact board, thermal resistance, heating system, adhesive and installation method with the supplier. Follow the specified commissioning and operating limits.

Can I sand or refinish an engineered floor?

That depends on the usable hardwood wear layer, the construction, the condition of the floor and the manufacturer's guidance. Overall board thickness does not tell you the wear-layer thickness. Ask us to confirm the specification and recommended care or refinishing approach for the chosen product.

Will the delivered floor look exactly like a sample?

No single sample represents every board. Grain, knots and tone naturally vary, and the finish can look different under your own lighting. Assess a representative selection and the grading description before you decide, particularly for a large or open-plan room.

What should I include in a quote request?

Send your preferred product or pattern, approximate floor area, postcode and whether you need supply only or supply and fitting. Include any plans, underfloor heating details and known subfloor or finished-floor-level requirements so the scope can be discussed.
